We are approached by many researchers to act as partners on their research projects, this can be for patient and public involvement, staff support to advise on research, or to support the delivery, implementation or dissemination of research.

Lead Researcher: Mr Michael Bowen

Institution: The College of Optometrists

Our Involvement: Alzheimer’s Society provided patient and public involvement support via Research Network input into proposal development, Research Network volunteer became co-researchers, we coordinated focus groups, and assisted with dissemination.

Research impact: The results from the PROVIDE study revealed how common visual problems are, paving the way for improvements in eye care for people with dementia. The findings and recommendations have been disseminated widely, making the most of networks both in the dementia and eye health sectors and strengthening links between the two fields.

Lead Researcher: Professor Carole Mockford

Institution: University of Warwick

Our Involvement: Alzheimer’s Society supported the study by co-ordinating a group of lay co-researchers with personal experience of dementia. As co-researchers the lay group conducted the data collection, analysis and also supported the dissemination of findings; presenting at conferences and co-authoring publications.

Research impact: The project aimed to develop recommendations for health and social care service professionals when supporting older people living with memory loss and their family carers in the first few weeks after leaving hospital and returning home. The public and patient involvement element of the project has raised the profile of service users becoming really involved in health research studies and in turn this has benefitted the SHARED study by highlighting the existing problems experienced by people with memory loss experience and their carers when leaving hospital and returning home.
