Friends of Dame Barbara Windsor to run 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon for the Dementia Revolution

Close friends of Barbara Windsor unveil themselves as an all-star team known as ‘Barbara’s Revolutionaries’.

Close friends of iconic actor and national treasure Barbara Windsor have today unveiled themselves as an all-star team known as ‘Barbara’s Revolutionaries’ that will run the 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon.

‘Barbara’s Revolutionaries’ on the running track

To the delight of the well-loved screen star, the team will be running for the Dementia Revolution, a year-long campaign created by dementia charities Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK for the event’s Charity of the Year.

In a video released this morning, the star-studded group of fellow actors, who worked with Barbara on popular soap EastEnders, meet for a preparatory training session with Barbara’s husband Scott Mitchell, leader of the inspirational team.

The group don Dementia Revolution running gear for a spirited stretching and sprints session with professional trainer and coach Martin Yelling, before sharing their motivations for taking on the incredible challenge in support of close friend Barbara, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2014.

Those bravely pulling on their running shoes are Adam Woodyatt, Jake Wood, Emma Barton, Natalie Cassidy, Kellie Shirley, Tanya Franks, Jamie Borthwick and Jane Slaughter, who all forged firm friendships with Barbara during their time on the soap.

United in support of the star, the group have joined the Dementia Revolution campaign in a bid to raise much-needed awareness of dementia and raise £100,000 to power ground-breaking research into the cruel disease.

Barbara herself previously expressed her support for the Dementia Revolution in October 2018, when husband Scott announced that he would be running the marathon on 28 April, coincidentally his 56th birthday, in a video that received thousands of views.

Dementia is the biggest health threat facing society with almost a million people living with the condition in the UK - it is now the country’s leading cause of death, ahead of heart disease. There are currently no effective treatments to slow, prevent or cure the diseases that cause dementia, but scientists are working tirelessly to beat the condition.

The Dementia Revolution sees Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK working together to overthrow old attitudes towards dementia and raise millions of pounds for the most ambitious dementia research initiative the UK has ever seen - the UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI), powering ground-breaking research to find better treatments and a cure.

Speaking about the creation of Barbara’s Revolutionaries, Scott said:

'From the bottom of my heart I really admire all of the team for taking on the Virgin Money London Marathon for the Dementia Revolution - it is such an amazing show of their love and friendship towards Barbara.

'It’s one thing to be friends with someone, but when people say that they’re going to give up their spare time and much needed days off and instead dedicate them to a cause that means so much, then that really is extraordinary - to both Barbara and me it’s so incredibly special.'

'It’s not until it happens on your doorstep that you realise how devastating dementia is. There is still such a lack of awareness that surrounds the condition. I see it often with Barbara - people get very nervous around her and they don’t know how to react or what to say. But it’s so important that we understand dementia. This cause desperately needs as much attention and awareness as possible. I hope that by running the marathon for the Dementia Revolution, Barbara’s Revolutionaries will help us achieve this, as well as raising a lot of money to fund vital research happening at the UK Dementia Research Institute.

'The training session was an amazing day. It was the first time the Revolutionaries had all got together for this purpose and just being around each other and all together in training really brought us together as a team and reinforced why we’re all here and what we’re running for.

'I can’t thank Barbara’s Revolutionaries enough for their support, it’s just fantastic, and I really hope that the public will get behind them too.  We need to show all our loved ones with dementia, like Barbara, that they are not alone and that we stand with them. Dementia affects so many people. We’d love those with ballot places to run for us, those who can to sponsor us, and for all of you to join the revolution. Together, let’s help to find a cure.'

Dame Barbara Windsor added:

'It means so much to me to see some of my closest friends coming together to support this cause. And I know it will mean a lot to everyone else living with dementia.'

Speaking about his decision to join the team, Jake Wood said:

'Barbara is such a wonderful, special friend to me, and this friendship has inspired me to join the Dementia Revolution. Dementia is caused by diseases that affect so many people, like Barbara, yet awareness of dementia is so low and research is so underfunded. We’ve come together as a team to change this, and make a stand against dementia.

'I hope the public side with us as Barbara’s Revolutionaries and help us raise lots of money to power dementia research towards a cure.'

Speaking about her decision to join the team Tanya Franks said:

'Like Barbara, my 86-year-old step-father is also living with Alzheimer’s, as are the parents of many of my friends. Every three minutes someone develops dementia in the UK, which is staggering, but currently not enough is being done to tackle it.

'We’ve taken on this challenge as a team to help highlight this condition and make a better experience for all those with a diagnosis.'

Speaking about her decision to join the team, Kellie Shirley said:

'I’ve previously worked in nursing homes and my mother is a specialist dementia nurse, so I’ve seen on a personal level just how much dementia affects people’s lives. It’s time to make a stand for all the families up and down the UK affected by dementia.

'Barbara really is an inspirational woman. I’ve known her for 15 years now and she was my mentor when we worked together. I’m so proud to have joined the Dementia Revolution for Barbara and for all the other people that this is going to benefit. That will keep me going when it gets tough.'

Jeremy Hughes, CEO of Alzheimer’s Society, said:

'It is absolutely fantastic that so many close friends of Dame Barbara Windsor have come together to form Barbara’s Revolutionaries and are taking on the Virgin Money London Marathon for the Dementia Revolution.

'It’s a display of true friendship in support of a cause that is so vital.'

'Dementia is the biggest health challenge society faces today, with almost a million people living with the condition and many more partners, families and friends affected.

'We urge the public to get behind Barbara’s Revolutionaries. Support them in making a stand against dementia and in funding ground-breaking research into the disease to improve dementia care and ultimately find a cure.'

Hilary Evans, Chief Executive of Alzheimer’s Research UK said:

'This year we hope to have a record number of runners pounding the streets of London to support loved ones with dementia and we’re proud to welcome Barbara’s Revolutionaries into the team.

'Dame Barbara’s story has already resonated with so many people across the country who are living with the realities of dementia and we hope her team of Revolutionaries will help to raise the profile of the condition, inspire others to run for such a worthwhile cause and raise thousands of pounds to keep our scientists working towards a cure.'

Barbara’s Revolutionaries are calling on the public to take a stand against dementia and join them in supporting the Dementia Revolution. The team urge all ballot place holders to sign-up to run for the Dementia Revolution and encourage anyone who can to donate towards their £100,000 fundraising target.

Barbara’s Revolutionaries join a wider team of Revolutionaries, each bringing different experiences of dementia. These include Carli Pirie, and her cousins Jack and Tom Bradshaw, whose family carries an inherited gene for Alzheimer’s disease meaning they each carry a 50% chance of developing the disease in their 50s, Dr Amanda Heslegrave, a dementia researcher at the UK DRI, and entrepreneur and 2014 Apprentice winner Mark Wright, whose grandfather has dementia.
