A book for people with more advanced dementia who have a Christian faith

From the July 2015 issue of our magazine, Janet Baylis, Manager of the Society's Dementia Knowledge Centre, reviews a book that provides spiritual comfort for people with a Christian background.

Strength for the journey by Helen Bate and Michelle Forster

This is the latest in the popular Pictures to Share series, produced for people in the later stages of dementia.

The theme of this book is spiritual comfort for older people who have a Christian faith. It harks back to a time when schools had regular Christian assemblies and Sunday school attendance was commonplace. Well-loved hymns and biblical quotations are featured, providing a context to the stunning pictures.

This series of books has a standard format, simple and clear with a mix of colour and black and white photography. The pictures are complemented by appropriate text - often familiar verse - in large print. Their intention is to make reading, particularly shared reading, an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

Pictures to Share books were selected for Reading Well Books on Prescription for dementia this year and are available from public libraries throughout England.

Pictures to Share (2015), £20 plus postage, ISBN: 9780956381880, from www.picturestoshare.co.uk and elsewhere.
