'Meera exemplifies the collective effort it will take to beat dementia.'

Michelle Dyson CBE, Chief Executive Officer at Alzheimer’s Society, said:

'We are delighted to congratulate Meera Syal on her Damehood for services to literature, drama and charity.'

Meera has been a passionate and unwavering champion for Alzheimer’s Society since becoming an Ambassador in 2013, following the support she received when her father was diagnosed with dementia.

Over the years her determination to stand alongside everyone affected by dementia has only grown stronger.

'Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer, with one million people now living with the condition. Voices like Meera’s are vital in raising awareness, breaking down stigma and ensuring dementia remains firmly in the public consciousness.

From becoming one of our first Dementia Friends to supporting our Behind Closed Doors campaign and Forget Me Not Appeal, Meera exemplifies the collective effort it will take to beat dementia.

We’re so proud to celebrate this richly deserved honour.'
