How a gift in your Will can help us beat dementia

By choosing to include a gift in your Will, you’ll partner with us to tackle dementia from every angle – research, support and campaigning. Gifts in Wills currently fund over a third of our work, bringing us closer to a world where dementia no longer devastates lives.

Provide support for carers

Caring for a loved one with dementia can be overwhelming. Many carers feel lost and alone. With your help, we can help them to feel confident and connected.

An average residuary gift of 10%* of your estate could go towards helping fund more than 40 support workshops for dementia family and unpaid carers, as part of our Carer Information and Support Programme (CRISP). These group workshops offer practical advice and emotional support to those looking after someone living with dementia, and have already helped hundreds of people.

Recruit people into vital clinical studies

Right now, thousands of people may be missing the chance to take part in clinical trials. Without a diverse mix of voices and backgrounds, new treatments might not work for everyone.

An average residuary gift of 15%* of your estate could go towards helping fund a Research Nurse for a year. These nurses help recruit people into clinical trials, making sure that we can develop new ways of diagnosing, caring for, and treating people with dementia.

Make dementia a priority

Dementia is too often ignored by decision makers, leaving thousands without the support they deserve. In 2024, over 18,000 of you joined our call to make dementia a priority, and gifts in Wills are helping us keep up the pressure.

An average residuary gift of 5%* of your estate could go towards helping fund vital campaigning work, like specialist reports that push dementia up the political agenda and secure the investment it urgently needs.

A residuary gift is taken from what’s left in your estate after all other gifts, taxes and costs have been settled.

The examples above are based on sector average residuary gift valuations to help you visualise the potential impact of your gift. For example, an average residuary gift of 5% of an estate could be worth £25,250.

These figures are for illustration only. Your solicitor can help you decide what’s right for your circumstances.

Including a gift in your Will is a powerful way to help fund vital research, support and campaigning. It can also benefit your loved ones.

Gifts to charity are exempt from Inheritance Tax. If you leave 10% or more of your estate to charity, the Inheritance Tax rate on the rest of your estate could reduce from 40% to 36%.

Meet a researcher supported by gifts in Wills

Dementia causes the brain to shrink, but how much and where it happens varies from person to person.

Every brain is unique, so we need to stop relying on comparisons to a generic average scan. Everyone, no matter their background, deserves an accurate diagnosis. Gifts in Wills are helping make this possible by funding vital progress.

– Professor James Cole

With funding from Alzheimer's Society, Professor Cole and his team have been able to start building a brain scan database categorised by age, sex and ethnicity. This database could help make more personalised comparisons possible.

A more tailored approach could make detecting changes in brain structure more accurate, moving us away from the current one-size-fits-all model and making sure that everyone can get the right support.
