My dear mother developed Alzheimer's years ago, and I tried to look after her at home until she hit me one day when I was trying to help her dress!!
Subsequently I was diagnosed in 2024 and am very fortunate in that I find myself quite amusing at times! For example one day I went to the dentist on the bus and on arrival suddenly noticed I had forgotten to put my trousers on!! WHAT a giggle! Of course I then had to explain to the receptionist, who now remembers me well when I visit!

My lovely husband died 6 weeks ago.I had cared for him at home until 8 weeks before he passed. His Alzheimer's took hold about 6 years ago so life over the past few years became increasing more difficult as each year passed. Unlike most people with Alzheimer's he didn't seem to forget me but just couldn't remember my name.He always used to say love much when I cared for him daily. As soon as he left home he seem to deteriorate very quickly and at the end his passing was really a massive shock. We had both worked in social care for many years so the caring probably came much easier for me and he was the love of my life so although it was hard at times we muddled through.Life now is very hard and there are memories everywhere
I didn't contact the Alzheimer's society because of my back ground really as I had worked with people with this conditions for many years.I would urge anyone to get support if only to realize they are not alone This dreadful heartbreaking condition is now More prevalent than it ever used to be and any monies to help research is so needed

I work as a care worker providing care to dementia patients all over Coventry. I have met some of the most amazing people around Coventry by supporting people to stay in their own homes for as long as possible. They are all special and hold a firm place in my heart.

I work for many families who have lost someone close to them...losing them twice...firstly when dementia steals away their memories...and then when the disease takes them physically. A double blow that devastates so many lives. Please help in whatever way you can.

When mom was diagnosed with alzheimers we already feared the outcome having seen her go from independant intelegant woman to someone who could not recognise her family. All her life she read books, knitted and loved tv dramas, she stopped reading when she couldn't remember the stories she continued watching tv but I couldn't follow storylines. Her mobility deteriated and falls became more frequent so she went from hospital to a nursing home.Fortunately she was never aggressive or angry just very frustrated at times. When she went into the nursing home she didn't realise where she was but slowly slipped away.

My husband of 51 years has been diagnosed with early onset dementia BV FTD. This has not really affected his memory but certainly his behaviour.Lack of communication with me is the new norm Apathy, lack of Empathy are also behaviours totally misunderstood by so many. I hope that by being a dementia friend I can relate to others in the same untreatable situation.

My father had Alzheimer’s complicated by strokes. My sister has now been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s as well. She is doing well on medication. Anything that can be discovered through research to help sufferers is essential. Well done Alzheimer’s Society!

My husband Geoff was the loveliest, kindest, helpful person I ever knew. Family was so important to him. He was always ready to help - family, friends, colleagues, church events. As well as his career in aviation engineering, he was a passionate collector of Celtic coins and a revered expert in his field. His book about one particular tribe’s coins (the Corieltavi) was “nearly finished” for years and eagerly anticipated by coin collectors and others in this field. A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s in 2022 following months of worrying symptoms meant that he found it more and more difficult to harness his thoughts and he never finished his book. He became increasingly frustrated and angry at what was happening to him. He became much worse very quickly and in April 2024 he was admitted to hospital when he was doubly incontinent and unable to stand, walk or do anything for himself. In July he moved to a Nursing Home - I was visiting every day. He died in the December after contracting pneumonia. I miss him so much, even now, but it’s the Geoff pre-Alzheimer’s I miss most.

My dear Dad passed away in 2020 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's. It was so hard to watch someone who taught me so much being unable to do the simplest of things. I still miss him every day, but I make an effort to not dwell on the bad and to think only of the good times. Love you Dad xx
