Grant applications involvement

Alzheimer’s Society is committed to ensure that the research we fund is not only of the highest scientific quality but also high priority and relevance to people affected by dementia.

Our grant funding process brings together the expertise of leading researchers with people with experience of dementia via our Research Network.

Lay review

All applications contain a 4 page lay application. All lay applications are reviewed and scored by our Research Network volunteers. We receive more applications than can be discussed at board meetings. Therefore, Research Network scores are taken into account, with peer review scores, to shortlist applications for discussion by our Grant Advisory Panel and Grant Advisory Board.

Grant Advisory Panels

We have two Grant Advisory Panels of 15 Research Network volunteers; one focussing on Biomedical applications and one on Care, Services & Public Health applications. The panel meets to discuss the shortlisted applications from a lay perspective, using the comments received from all Research Network volunteers.

Four members of the Grant Advisory Panel (on a rotation basis) attend the Grant Advisory Board meeting. More information on the grant award process is available here.
