Coronation Street's Debbie Webster faces realities of dementia in powerful new storyline
We're partnering with Coronation Street to raise awareness of young-onset dementia, its impact on those living with the condition and the people who care for them.
Our partnership with Coronation Street
We've partnered with ITV and Coronation Street during World Alzheimer's Month to raise awareness of young-onset dementia alongside the ongoing Debbie Webster storyline.
Across a series of key Coronation Street episodes this month, we'll feature bespoke adverts highlighting the impact dementia can have on those living with the condition and the people who love and care for them.
The partnership comes as Coronation Street follows the progression of Debbie Webster's dementia, exploring themes that include memory loss, disorientation, personal safety and care planning.
We hope the storyline will encourage more people to understand the realities of dementia and seek support when they need it.
Dementia affects nearly one million people in the UK, and at any time a third of people don’t have a diagnosis, leaving them unable to access vital support or understand the condition.
Dedicated adverts will appear around four key Coronation Street episodes airing on 18, 21, 24 and 25 September. They will feature forget-me-not flowers growing across the famous cobbles, alongside a voiceover from actor Julie Hesmondhalgh, highlighting why it will take a society to beat dementia.
The importance of showing Debbie's story
Michelle Dyson CB, Alzheimer's Society CEO, said: 'Coronation Street has a long history of telling powerful stories that reflect the realities of life, and Debbie Webster's dementia story is doing just that.
'Through this collaboration with Coronation Street, we're helping to shine a light on the devastating realities of dementia for people living with the condition and for those caring for them.
We hope it encourages more people to seek support, learn more about dementia and feel less alone.
'This World Alzheimer's Month, we're reminding everyone that it will take a society to beat dementia.
Alongside the broadcast activity, we'll direct viewers to information and support for anyone affected by dementia.
Our Dementia Support Line provides practical guidance and emotional support for people living with dementia, carers, family members and friends.
