Government publish Adult Social Care Reform White Paper - Alzheimer’s Society responds

Minister for Care Gillian Keegan MP has announced the publication of the Government’s White Paper on adult social care, named ‘People at the Heart of Care’ - putting forward their long-term proposals for adult social care reform.

The majority of people using social care are people living with dementia, both in care homes and in the community.

James White, Head of Public Affairs and Campaigns at Alzheimer’s Society said:

'It’s great to see detailed plans from the Government today that truly have the potential to transform the lives of hundreds of thousands of people living with dementia in England. While they won’t fix social care overnight, they have put us firmly on the right path.'

But ambitious proposals are not enough - they will fail if the Government tries to fund social care on the cheap through stingy funding settlements.

'After the thousands of individual tragedies we’ve heard about during the pandemic, with so many people with dementia dying or suffering irreversible damage, the Government must seize the opportunity to be serious about social care reform and put some transformative funding behind these potentially life-changing plans.'

'Only then will we have a quality social care system we can all be proud of.'
