How fit do I need to be to do this trek?

This challenge requires a good level of fitness and stamina. You should incorporate aerobic, anaerobic, strength, and flexibility exercises into your training. You make sure you've trained in the boots you'll be wearing during the hike, and incorporate hills into your training too.

What support will Alzheimer's Society provide?

We will be here to support you throughout your challenge. We can help with both challenges of raising your sponsorship money and getting fit. We provide fundraising support, sponsor forms and publicity tips.

What will the weather be like?

It should be 25-30ºC at the foot of the mountain, decreasing as you climb. You should prepare for all eventualities as mountainous weather can be unpredictable.

Do I need any vaccinations?

You should contact your GP or travel clinic for the latest travel health advice. All participants are advised by the Tanzanian authorities to have a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate to enter Tanzania.  Your certificate will be issued by either your GP or a travel clinic prior to travelling to Tanzania. Tanzania is also a malarias country and so it is important that you seek medical advice about taking anti-malarial medication before climbing Kilimanjaro.

Do I need insurance?

You must have suitable insurance which should cover the costs of medical repatriation, trip curtailment costs, and trekking up to 6,000m.

You must let the tour operator have your insurance details by at least eight weeks before the departure date. Do also make sure you declare any pre-existing conditions otherwise your insurance company will not pay up should you need to make a claim.
