The challenge

The Great North Swim is the largest open water swimming event in the UK. Thousands of swimmers of all abilities don their wetsuits and swimming caps and dive into this beautiful open water location to swim ½ mile, 1 mile, 2 miles, 5K or 10K.

Held in the stunning surroundings of Lake Windermere, England's largest lake at 10.5 miles long (17km), stretching from Ambleside in the North to Newby Bridge in the South. The event will run from 5th - 7th June 2020.

Our charity places are for the 1 mile swim. You can visit the Great North Swim website to secure your place for another distance in this fantastic event - don't forget to choose Alzheimer’s Society as your charity of choice.

You will pay a registration fee of £25, then commit to raising a minimum of £200 in sponsorship. We will send out a free swimming cap for all those who raise £100 by 6 weeks before the event.

How do I get my swimming cap?

If you raise £100 by 6 weeks before the event we will send you your free swimming cap automatically.

Can I swim another distance other than 1 mile?

Yes of course, we have 1 mile places available through us but you can sign up via the organisers website. Once you have your place you can use the own place button on here to let us know you want to fundraise for us. You will still get all the same support from us.

How do I pick my day and time slot?

Shortly after you sign up, you will receive an email asking you to register with the event organisers using a token. It is at this point you will get to choose your time and date.
