Gas Distribution Networks

A partnership keeping people safe and warm in their homes.

About our partnership with the Gas Distribution Networks

Since May 2024, Alzheimer’s Society has partnered with three of the UK’s major Gas Distribution Networks - Cadent, Wales & West Utilities and SGN – to deliver a sector-leading programme supporting people affected by dementia.

Together, this £1.9 million initiative is helping people to stay safe, warm and financially secure at home.

Ways the partnership is helping people affected dementia

This partnership brings support directly to those who need it most. Frontline teams provide energy advice, carbon monoxide safety awareness, income maximisation advice, and support access to services like the Priority Services register.

Over 900 colleagues have now been trained, embedding energy awareness into day-to-day dementia support across England, Wales and Northern Ireland

Since launch, more than 91,000 conversations have helped people affected by dementia avoid crisis, understand complex systems and access the vital support they need.

For many families, this has led to very real outcomes, from emergency fuel deliveries to new heating systems and targeted support in rural communities.

In a September 2025 survey, one in three people affected by dementia said they were cutting back on essentials to pay energy bills, 65% reported forgetting to switch off appliances and safety concerns remain high, with a third forgetting to check carbon monoxide alarms.

By reaching people early with the right advice, the partnership is preventing issues from escalating into crisis.

How Dementia Advisers are supporting the partnership

Dementia Advisers are driving this work forward by providing personalised, ongoing support to help people navigate everyday challenges and remain safe at home.

Through their conversations, by March 2026 over 22,000 people have been supported to sign up to the Priority Services register. This vital service ensures vulnerable people receive additional support during power outages, yet many are unaware it exists.

Together, this partnership demonstrates the power of collaboration to deliver real-world impact - improving quality of life, easing pressure on families, and helping to prevent avoidable crises.

As a Community Development Co-ordinator, I think it's vital that vulnerable service users register on the Priority Services register. In Wales, where heating fuel is common in rural homes, cold weather can delay deliveries.

Priority Services registration ensures these users get priority, reducing delivery times from up to two weeks to just five working days during peak periods.
