Dementia Strategy for Wales

Keep up to date on the development of the Welsh Government's Dementia Strategy.

Background

Following Alzheimer's Society Cymru's successful #45000reasons campaign, the Welsh Government is producing the first ever Dementia Strategy for Wales.

We are calling for the strategy to be ambitious and achievable in order to improve services, care and support for people living with dementia in Wales.

Making voices heard

Our priority was ensuring that people affected by dementia were involved in the development of the dementia strategy, to meaningfully influence its direction.

Alzheimer’s Society Cymru has worked closely with Welsh Government and Dementia Empowerment and Engagement Project (DEEP) to deliver consultation and engagement sessions with people affected by dementia, in order to inform the strategy, as well as engaging with our service users, under-represented communities, and the general public in a variety of ways.

We also sat on the Task and Finish Group, using our expertise to make recommendations to the government. You can read the report of these consultation events below.

Consultation

Joining forces

We also united against dementia with twenty two organisations which represent and support people living with dementia, carers, and their wider support network, as well as health and social care professionals, to set out key joint priorities for the strategy.

Our joint letters to the Cabinet Secretary were informed by the voices of people affected by dementia, who contributed through the work of our individual organisations, and the draft Strategy.

You can read these letters below.

Our response

The result of all of this work is a comprehensive response to the government's consultation, setting out our recommendations - based on the experiences of people affected by dementia in Wales. You can download the response in full or the executive summary below.

We look forward to working further with the Welsh Government and other partners – in particular, people affected by dementia – to ensure that an ambitious strategy is implemented.
