Swim a mile to beat dementia
Unite against dementia by swimming a memory mile!
Sign up to swim a mile, you can swim it all in one go or over weeks or months. Pick your favourite place to swim, your local pool, the sea, a lake, a river, the bath (well, maybe not in the bath!).
It’ll be tough but whether you do the doggy paddle or the butterfly, we know you are up to the challenge.
However and wherever you choose to swim every penny you raise will help us support more people affected by dementia and get us closer to a cure.

How do I take part
- Sign up to receive your fundraising pack (packed full of support, fundraising ideas and training tips).
- Choose where and how you will swim your mile. You can spread it over weeks, months or – if you’re feeling brave – you can do it all in one go! You can do it on your own or as a group.
- Fundraise. Set up a JustGiving page and ask your friends, family and colleagues to sponsor you (you are swimming a whole mile after all!). You could even hold an event like a quiz or a bake sale. Your fundraising pack is full of great tips.
- Swim. Complete your swim and feel like a champion!

'Mam lost her long and brave battle with vascular dementia on 9 November 2016. I want to pay tribute to her and at the same time raise as much money as I can for Alzheimer's Society.
I am intending to “Swim a Memory Mile” in July at Tunbridge Wells Sport Centre. It is a 25 metre pool which means I’ll be swimming 64 lengths. I’m intending to swim it all in one session.
My aim is to raise at least £250.’

Do I have to swim my mile in one go?
Only if you want to. You can choose to swim it in one go or swim it over weeks or months – every splash matters! There’s no time limit, you can do it at your own pace. Our helpful fundraising pack contains training advice and tips.
Can I swim outdoors?
Yes absolutely! You can swim in the pool or in the great outdoors. Just make sure it’s safe and you’re aware of the water temperature. Our pack contains useful health and safety information.
Can we swim as a group?
The more the merrier! But each person in your group has to complete their own mile themselves.
How much do I have to fundraise?
There’s no strict minimum fundraising target but we do ask that you aim for at least £100. Plus, if you raise over £100 you will receive a very stylish Alzheimer’s Society swimming hat!
How can I fundraise?
Our handy pack contains all kinds of tips and advice for fundraising. We suggest you set up a JustGiving page and share in with your friends and family on social media so they can see your achievement! There are a whole host of ideas from cake sales to quizzes or even a pool party!
How do I get my free swimming cap?
Once you’ve raised £100, send us an email [email protected] and we’ll get a cap sent out to you.
How old do I need to be?
If you are organising your own challenge we do not set any age limit.
