About the Welsh Baccalaureate

The Welsh Baccalaureate is based on a Skills Challenge Certificate, which will be graded, and Supporting Qualifications. To support learners to develop and demonstrate an understanding of and proficiency in essential and employability skills, Alzheimer's Society have developed opportunities for students to learn about dementia through setting three Challenge Briefs and an Individual Project Brief:

  • Key Stage 4: Enterprise Brief - asks learners to develop an aid, service or App that responds to the needs of people living with dementia.
  • Post 16: Community Brief -  challenges learners to develop activities for people living with dementia in their local community.
  • Advanced: Community Brief - challenges learners to develop a programme of activities for people living with dementia in their local community.
  • Advanced: Individual Project -  asks learners to complete a research project looking at the health and social care system with a focus on how people living with dementia interact with it.

Resources to support teachers of the Welsh Baccalaureate

Dementia Friends Information Sessions

A Dementia Friends Information Session lasts one hour and is delivered by a Dementia Friends Champion volunteer. It is an interactive session which examines what dementia is, how it affects someone and the things we can all do to help people who are living with dementia. Fill in our request form to organise a session for your class.

SCIE e-learning modules

These free online e-learning modules cover: what is dementia; living with dementia; what causes dementia; diagnosing dementia; common difficulties and how to help; the emotional impact; positive communication.

Prime Minister’s Challenge on Dementia documents: 20122020

David Cameron launched his first Challenge on Dementia in 2012, and a further one with goals for 2020. These documents can be used to highlight the challenges that are faced by people with dementia in the UK, and examine solutions that the government is supporting.

Alzheimer’s Society Key Stage 1 - 4 dementia resources (in English and Welsh)

These resources contain three PSHE-focused lesson plans each, as well as other ideas for lessons about dementia linking to other subjects in the curriculum. The resource packs can be requested via the link.

DEEP website

The Dementia Engagement & Empowerment Project (DEEP) brings together groups of people with dementia from across the UK and supports these groups to change services and policies that affect the lives of people with dementia.

  • Dementia-friendly auditThis activity supports students to conduct an audit of a local area or building to see how dementia-friendly it is.
  • Survey people in local areaThis activity asks students to investigate how dementia affects their local area.
  • Dementia Friendly signageThis activity encourages students to use their creativity and respond to design spec guidance, to make signage that is more dementia-friendly.
  • Build a memory boxStudents investigate particular themes or historical eras to create memory boxes relevant to people living with dementia.
  • Issue Trees: Students explore the causes and effects of the stigma that surrounds dementia on society.
  • Making the Connections: This is an interactive activity to explain dementia and understand how it affects the brain.
  • Design your own assistive technologyUsing guidance from the Alzheimer’s Society, students are challenged to find creative and technological solutions to problems faced by people with dementia.
