During this one day session, you will learn how to confidently construct person centred activities for people living with dementia. The activities draw on our extensive research and practical experience supporting people through all types and stages of dementia. You will gain skills to plan engaging activities based on a person's interests and life history, learn how to confidently start conversations and reminiscence and understand how to encourage independence and participation to help people with dementia to live well. Running great activities also contains the latest information about sight loss and dementia. This content has been developed in partnership with Royal National Institute of Blind People. Pricing: Our training is flexible and cost-effective - we do not charge VAT.  We run training in your workplace and offer bespoke consultancy.

Our pricing is dependent on your sector:

Social care and third sector organisations: £695 excluding expenses
Health care and statutory sector organisations: £795 excluding expenses
Private sector organisations: £895 excluding expenses

Who should attend? Day centre staff and managers, including activity co-ordinators and domiciliary care staff and managers. Also suitable for support staff working in care homes, including cooks, domestic staff etc.

Delivery style: Interactive face to face training.

Pre course requirements: Step inside dementia or equivalent previous dementia knowledge and/or experience.

Delegate numbers:  Suitable for groups of between 8-16 delegates. An extra charge will apply for additional delegate up to a maximum of 20.

Learning outcomes

The course will equip participants to:

  • Explain the importance of activities for the well-being of a person with dementia
  • Understand ways that daily activities provide opportunities for positive social interaction
  • Describe how to encourage participation by people who may be reluctant or disinterested and identify reasons why they may be feeling disengaged.
  • Evaluate and reflect on the provision of activities
  • Apply a person-centred approach when tailoring activities to the individual, incorporating life history and the effect of dementia
  • Identify how to plan an individual or group activity and make use of everyday resource materials and the local community
  • Identify ideas for conversation and reminiscing as part of daily work
  • Engage people with dementia in everyday activities
