Dementia support for South Asian and Indian families from Alzheimer's Society

The Information Programme for South Asian Families (IPSAF) aims to provide support and information to South Asian families and friends of people with dementia.

This service provides culturally tailored support and information, which helps to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills of families and friends.  This is important as South Asian communities have a higher prevalence of diabetes and cardiovascular disease and therefore an increased risk of developing dementia. The IPSAF service helps participants to identify and engage more fully with local statutory and voluntary services and dementia services provided by Alzheimer's Society.

The IPSAF Programme

IPSAF consists of four themed sessions delivered by Alzheimer's Society staff in partnership with local South Asian faith and community organisations, using a range of purposely developed audio-video resources.

A short IPSAF film about dementia and how people can live well with the condition is available in EnglishHindi and Urdu.

There are four sessions within the IPSAF programme:

  • Session 1: Understanding dementia
The physical, psychological and emotional impact that dementia may have on the person living with the condition, their family and friends.
  • Session 2: Legal and financial matters
Information on legal and money matters, planning ahead and the ways of making decisions now and in the future.
  • Session 3: Looking after others
Practical information on ways to support the person with dementia, communication and how to access support.
  • Session 4: Looking after yourself
The physical, psychological and emotional implications that dementia may have on the family and those involved in supporting the person with dementia, including their relationships, ways of looking after themselves and information about relevant support and services.

The service was developed and provided (as the pilot version) in 13 areas in England during the two years to March 2015 and has been independently evaluated by the School of Dementia Studies (University of Bradford). The final summary briefing is available to download.
