If you care for someone with dementia, you may find it beneficial to meet
others in similar circumstances. It can be helpful to realise that you are not
alone, to talk to people who are dealing with similar issues, to share tips and
experiences or simply to relax for a while.
The Woking Group usually
meets once a month, on a Thursday afternoon during the wintertime, and on a
Thursday evening in the summer. The evening meetings allow people to attend who
usually work during the day. We are pleased to welcome any family member of
someone with dementia, even if you feel you are not the main carer.
The
programme for meetings varies: sometimes there is a speaker covering a
care-related topic; sometimes there is a group discussion of shared issues and
problems; sometimes the meeting is entirely social. In any case, a period of
time is always set aside for informal chat and getting to know others.
Branch staff and group members try to help out with transport to and
from meetings, when necessary. During afternoon meetings, carers may arrange to
leave the person they are caring for at the Branch Day Centre. Although the
support group is designed for carers alone, there are occasional social
meetings and outings that are open to the person being cared for.
