Confidentiality

Sometimes when a carer or relative contacts a GP with concerns about a person, the GP refuses to talk to them on the grounds that they will break patient confidentiality. However, if the person lacks mental capacity, the GP is allowed to share information about them in some circumstances.

For more information, see Factsheet 425, How the GP can help.
