Volunteer: Befriender, Devon
Where is it you want me to volunteer?
Alzheimer’s Society is launching a new Befriending service across the whole of Devon which will initiate, support and monitor a relationship with a carefully matched Befriending volunteer and a local person who has been newly diagnosed with dementia.
What will I be doing?
People who have dementia often become socially isolated so Befrienders will be required to encourage those that they are befriending to participate in an activity outside of the home (wherever possible). This may consist of going out for a walk, attending a social club, participating in a group activity, going shopping, partaking in a hobby or simply having a coffee and a chat in a local cafe.
No previous experience is necessary although Befrienders will need to be able to provide a listening ear, support and encouragement. Training for the role will be provided and Volunteer Befrienders will be entitled to the reimbursement of their travel and agreed out of pocket expenses.
