Ivan Lewis MP to address dementia conference

The conference entitled 'The rising cost of dementia in the UK - Are we prepared?' will launch major new research by the London School of Economics and King's College London into the economic and social impact of dementia.

In his speech, the Minister will tackle the challenges and opportunities of an ageing society and joins a line-up of speakers including: Prof Martin Knapp, London School of Economics; Prof Sube Banerjee, Institute of Psychiatry; Prof Clive Ballard, Alzheimer's Society; and, Marion Harrington, Association of Directors of Social Services.

Neil Hunt, chief executive of the Alzheimer's Society, says,

'The number of people with dementia in the UK is set to soar. This will place an intolerable strain on our health and social care system unless we act now. The conference will present the latest findings on the numbers of people with dementia today and forecast for the years ahead. It is a must for anyone involved health or social care. Debate at the conference will also focus on the cost of dementia to government, services, and to society. We will be considering the future for dementia care and looking at how we plan for one of the UK's most serious health issues.'
