Award winning actress, Carey Mulligan, will join people from across London on Sunday (23 September) to fight dementia at Alzheimer’s Society’s flagship fundraising event, Memory Walk.
Carey, an Alzheimer's Society ambassador, said:
'I am really looking forward to joining the walkers at Battersea Park on Sunday. The London Memory Walk is set to be the biggest and best yet so I can't wait to be involved.
'Alzheimer's Society is a cause close to my heart as Nans, (her Nan) has dementia so I grew up experiencing the effects the condition has on her. I feel privileged to have been asked to attend the London Memory Walk and help support people with dementia like Nans.'
Harjit Kaur, Alzheimer's Society Community Fundraiser for London, Said:
'We are so excited that Carey Mulligan has agreed to join the walkers at the London Memory Walk and we are very grateful to her.
'There are 69,000 people living with dementia in London and this is expected to rise to 80,000 by 2021. That is why Memory Walk is so important as it raises vital funds for local services for people with dementia and their carers such as dementia cafes and support groups. I'm sure Carey's attendance at the walk will make everyone's day even more special.'
Carey will also joined by the creator of Thunderbirds, Gerry Anderson and his son Jamie Anderson. Gerry was diagnosed with dementia 18 months ago. The Director of Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, Mat Whitecross, will also attend.
Memory Walk 2012 is being held in partnership with Bupa Care Homes. This year Alzheimer's Society encouraged people to go the extra mile and asked people to take part in Bupa's 'Memory Mile' at the end of the walk to raise a further £5 to support people with dementia.
Siobhan Drane, Bupa Care Homes community and partnership manager, said:
'Our staff work closely with those living with dementia and their families, so we know how upsetting it can be. That's why we've been encouraging our staff, residents' friends and families to support the walk so we can raise awareness of dementia, and raise additional funds through the Bupa Memory Mile.'
The London Memory Walk takes place in Battersea Park on 23 September and will raise money for people with dementia and their cares in the local area.
To register just go to the Bandstand in Battersea Park from 10am. The walk starts at 11am.
