Martyn runs for home in the Bupa London 10,000 for Alzheimer’s Society

Published 25 May 2011

The Financial Controller of a care home company has been inspired by some of their residents to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Society by taking part in the Bupa London 10,000 on 30 May.

Martyn Lainchbury, aged 63 and from Enfield, has worked for the company for almost four years and in the course of his job regularly visits the homes, some of which provide specialist dementia care.  Martyn said:

'We may think that dementia is something that won't affect us, but there are 750,000 people in the UK with dementia including a third of those people resident in care homes.  In just 10 years, that will rise to 1 million so it is something which will touch us all at some time in our lives.'

Martyn, a keen cricketer, started running when he turned 60, encouraged by his daughter, Lianne, but this will be the first running event he's ever taken part in.  He added:

'I might not make the fastest time, but, one way or another, I'll do it.  Taking part in a Bupa Great Run for Alzheimer's Society is a great way to feel fitter and healthier whilst helping to support people with dementia and their carers.'

Around 260 people are taking part in the Bupa London 10,000 for Alzheimer's Society on bank holiday Monday.  The 10k run starts and ends in St James's Park and takes in some of the capital's most famous landmarks.

Alzheimer's Society is the nominated charity for the Bupa Great Run Series for a third consecutive year.

Dr Graham Stokes, Bupa's director of dementia care, explains why Alzheimer's Society was a natural choice to be the nominated charity:

'We're very pleased to be supporting Alzheimer's Society and Alzheimer Scotland for a third year. As the UK's leading provider of dementia care, we're committed to helping people with the disease to live well. We understand how important it is to work with Alzheimer's Society to support people with dementia today and find a cure for tomorrow. Signing up to support the Alzheimer's charities in a Bupa Great Run means you can get fit, help reduce your risk of dementia and raise money for a very worthwhile cause.'
