Helping people with dementia to stay at home could save NHS millions

Published 18 May 2011

Helping people with dementia to live at home and preventing them from needing to go into hospital could save the NHS £127million a year, according to a report launched by Healthcare at Home.

The report found that many people with dementia and carers are being failed by the current system, resulting in many people ending up in inappropriate care settings. It calls for a new model of care that would result in better quality of care and fewer hospital admissions.

Alzheimer's Society comment:

'Dementia is one of the biggest health and social care challenges of our generation. Yet, as this report once again shows, we are failing to address it effectively. Avoidable hospital admissions not only represent a huge financial cost to the NHS but can also have an unacceptable impact on the health and emotional well-being of people with dementia and their carers.'

'While staying at home is not right for everyone we know many people want to remain in the familiar surroundings they are used to with family or loved ones. Only with the right support will this be possible.'
