Results of new type of Alzheimer’s drugs presented at International Conference

Published 14 July 2009

A trial of a new anticholinesterase inhibitor for people with dementia is going well according to a presentation at the International Conference of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Dr David Wilkinson from University of Southampton reported interim results of a Double-Blind Phase 2b Study of Monthly Mimopezil Implants, a new drug for people in early and moderate stages of dementia.

'This study investigates the potential to develop a fourth drug that works in a similar way to existing drug treatments for people with mild and moderate Alzheimer's disease. As each person reacts differently to types of medication this is an exciting concept. Interestingly this new research explores the possibility of administering the treatment as an implant. As people with dementia can have difficulty remembering to take their medication, this could offer people more independence and peace of mind. However, while results look promising, this research is in the early stages and further investigation is needed before this can be translated into a deliverable treatment for people with dementia.

'With the right investment, dementia can be defeated but dementia research in the UK is desperately underfunded. The Government invests eight times less in dementia research than cancer research.'
