Sidney Eric Norton was today given a nine-month suspended prison sentence for killing his wife, who had Alzheimer's disease. Following the verdict, Alzheimer's Society comments on caring for a person with dementia

Published 10 October 2008

The devastating symptoms of dementia can make caring for someone with the condition extremely challenging.

Dementia is more than just memory loss; it is caused by physical diseases of the brain and gradually robs people of their lives.

With two thirds of all people with dementia living in the community, it is families and friends who are currently bearing the brunt of care. Combined they save the UK £6 billion a year.

We urgently need investment in financial, practical and emotional support for carers to help them effectively care for people living dementia.
