Alzheimer's Society comment on the announcement by Carol Thatcher that Baroness Thatcher has dementia

Published 26 August 2008

Alzheimer’s Society comment on the announcement by Carol Thatcher that Baroness Thatcher has dementia.

The sad news that Baroness Thatcher has dementia has highlighted a condition that is desperately under recognised and underfunded in the UK.

One in three people over 65 will die with a form of dementia. Dementia is not a natural part of ageing; it is caused by diseases of the brain and robs people of their lives.

Currently 700,000 people in the UK are living with dementia and this number is expected to rise to over a million in less than 20 years. Carol Thatcher's decision to speak out about her mother's dementia will strike a chord with millions of families across the UK who face a daily battle with its devastating impact.

For too long dementia has been kept in the shadows and families have been left to struggle alone. By speaking openly about the effects of dementia, we will begin to tackle some of the stigma that still surrounds the condition and ensure that everyone with dementia gets the care and support they deserve.
