Intrepid adventurers embark on a trip to remember

Published 24 June 2011

An intrepid team of travellers are set to cycle, row and hike their way from Dublin to Mount Snowdon in a bid to raise thousands for Alzheimer's Society.

The team of 13 taking part in 'The Trip to Remember' will be starting their epic 36 hour journey at Dublin Harbour and from there will be cycling 45 miles down the Irish coast to the town of Arklow. At Arklow they will prepare for a gruelling 90 mile row across the Irish Sea, at night, to the town of Porthmadog in North Wales and will then hike 15 miles through the hills and mountains of Snowdonia National Park to reach the peak of Mount Snowdon.

Team member David Bedford, 24, came up with the challenge because his grandmother Eunice Bedford has had Alzheimer's disease since 2001 and is supported by his grandfather Charlie. David says,

'I have wanted to do something to raise money for Alzheimer's Society for a few years now. At the end of last year I started thinking about what I could do and the route for The Trip to Remember began to evolve. The response to the challenge has been incredible and I am extremely proud to be joined by some fantastic people, including two ocean rowers and the first man to row solo from Australia to New Zealand. I am extremely proud of how my Nanna and Granddad have faced their challenge over the last ten years and I hope that with such a strong team around me I will be able to face mine with the same amount of bravery and determination.'

Among those joining David for the journey is Mark Beaumont, the documentary maker, writer and star of 'The Man who Cycled the World', who is currently training for a rowing expedition through the Canadian Arctic. Commenting on his decision to join the team Mark says,

'I am delighted to be involved in The Trip to Remember. The Irish Sea is a formidable stretch of water and the whole event is such a unique endurance challenge. It will be perfect open water training before my next expedition and also such a fantastic fundraiser for Alzheimer's Society.'

'The Trip to Remember' will take place over the weekend of 9 and 10 July. To sponsor the team or find out more information about the event visit www.thetriptoremember.co.uk.
