Coronation Street scooped an award for Best Soap Storyline for factory boss Mike Baldwin’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease at the TV Quick Awards 2006, held in London on the 4th September.
The emotional plot saw actor Johnny Briggs struggle to cope with the effects of the disease before suffering a stroke and dying in the arms of arch-rival Ken Barlow.
Researchers at Granada were in contact with the Society while working on the storyline.
On the eve of Mike's diagnosis of Alzheimer's, the Society's helpline received a record number of calls.
The storyline helped to raise awareness of Alzheimer's disease, and the work of the Society.
