Action needed to improve dementia care
Published 29 March 2011
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) today (Tuesday, 29 March 2011) published its second annual report on the state of health care and adult social care in England.
Alzheimer's Society comment:
Louise Lakey'Two thirds of people in care homes have dementia. It is therefore reassuring to hear that care home provision and quality is improving in some areas. Unfortunately, we know this isn't happening everywhere and good general care does not always equate to good dementia care.
'We also know that home is where the heart is and where many people with dementia want to stay. Yet as this report suggests, a lack of community services could be forcing some people into care homes earlier than they would want. With spending cuts beginning to take force it is essential we think long term and invest now in cost-effective, good quality care both in the community and in care homes.'
