Wolves legend supports Alzheimer's Society

Published 25 February 2011

Former Wolves goalkeeper, Matt Murray, has been awarded a testimonial by the club and will donate some of the proceeds to Alzheimer's Society.

matt murrayMatt spent 20 years with the club before retiring from football aged just 29 due to a serious knee injury and hopes to raise funds for four charities, including Alzheimer's Society, through a series of events in 2011.

He follows fellow Wolves goalkeeper, Bert Williams MBE, in raising much needed funds and awareness for people with dementia and their carers.

Matt says,

"My inspiration here is the friend, mentor and unqualified legend that is Bert Williams - still the greatest goalkeeper ever to play for Wolves.

Bert lost his beloved wife Evelyn to this terrible disease and has waged his own battle against it by raising more than £100,000 for the Society, a feat recognised in his recent and richly-deserved MBE.

Bert remains a big figure in my life. He has always found time for me, offering advice and support at all stages of my career. Through our relationship, I have been made aware of the Society and relish the chance to make a contribution in the fight against Alzheimer's."

Jonathan Andrews, Head of Partnership Fundraising at Alzheimer's Society, says:

"We are delighted that Matt is supporting Alzheimer's Society. As a charity, we rely on the generosity of high profile individuals to continue our vital work. We know he was a very gifted goalkeeper and it's wonderful that he's now giving his time to help us champion the rights of people living with dementia and the millions of people who care for them."
