Musical memories in aid of Alzheimer's Society
Published 2 February 2011
Does a particular song take you back to a certain time and place?
Film star Joan Collins says The Way You Look Tonight reminds her of the first dance at her wedding to Percy Gibson. TV presenter Richard Madeley remembers playing guitar at the local folk club when he hears American Pie by Don McLean. Pavarotti's rendition of Nessun Dorma sets off memories of the 1990 World Cup for Gary Lineker and Joanna Lumley thinks of her childhood in the Far East whenever she hears Nat King Cole singing Stardust.
They join over 200 celebrities who have been asked what song brings back special memories for them, to be included in a book to raise funds for Alzheimer's Society.
They Can't Take That Away from Me has been compiled by Jackie McGregor, who has watched both of her parents develop Alzheimer's disease.
Jackie says
'During music therapy, my father began to cry when he heard Moonlight Serenade, my parents' special love song.
It was clear music was helping him evoke memories of my mother. This gave me the idea to start a project to raise money for Alzheimer's.'
Jackie's star names also include Sir Michael Parkinson, Graham Norton, Julian Lennon, Gordon Ramsey, David Cameron, Tony Blair and even The Dalai Lama.
They Can't Take That Away From Me is available to pre-order from Amazon
