Professional musicians offer free music workshops for people with dementia

Published 7 January 2011

People with dementia in London are being given the opportunity to compose and record their own songs with the help of professional musicians.

The Turtle Song project, a collaboration between the Royal College of Music, English Touring Opera and Turtle Key Arts, will hold weekly sessions between February and April for people with all forms of dementia and their carers.

The project's aim is to stimulate both the bodies and brains of people with dementia through singing, composing songs and recording them onto CD. A DVD of their live performances in front of friends and family will also be made.

Each session will be led by Tim Yealland from English Touring Opera and the award-winning composer Rachel Leach, with the support of students from the Royal College of Music. The free sessions take place every Tuesday between 10.30am and 12.15pm and start on 15 February at College Hall, 220 - 238 Goldhawk Road, London W12 9PL.
