Great North Run in memory of late father

Published 24 September 2010

Karen Elstob hopes to raise hundreds of pounds for the Alzheimer’s Society in the memory of her father Gerald Elstob who died with the condition in 1999 aged 65 by running the Great North Run.

Karen who keeps in peak physical condition by running 50 kilometres a week has just run the Great North Run in memory of her father who was diagnosed with the disease at the age of 53 and suffered for 12 years. Karen ran in a time of 2 hours and 24 minutes and had a great day despite the wet weather.

Karen runs nearly every day and in doing so still feels close to her father. Karen's father was a great athlete and enjoyed cricket, squash, running and bowls.

"The disease took away his mobility, his dignity and latterly his speech. I ran for my dad and all who are suffering on a daily basis." says Karen

Karen also supports the Society in others ways such as taking part in the annual Memory Walk at York with her 14yr old son and by sparing her time to support the local street collections.
