Alison’s family make a Stirling effort for Alzheimer’s Society taking part in the Bupa Great North Run

Published 17 September 2010

Alison Stirling and her three daughters will be taking part in this weekend’s Great North Run in aid of Alzheimer's Society and in recognition of a remarkable carer.

Alison, along with her daughters, Angela, Emma and Sophie, would like to recognise the support her father, John, has given to his first wife, Pauline, and second wife, Barbara, who both sadly died with dementia.

John's first wife and Alison's mother, Pauline, died in 1980 from the results of a fire she started in the family home after suffering from Alzheimer's for 10 years. John's second wife, Barbara, died recently having been diagnosed with vascular dementia over 10 years ago.

Alison says,

'We are running in the Bupa Great North Run in memory of my mother and Barbara, in recognition of my father looking after his two wives for over 20 years of his life and to raise awareness of Alzheimer's, particularly in younger people.'

Alison has also received support from family friend and Alzheimer's Society ambassador, Ruth Langsford.

Ruth says,

'I'm wishing Alison and the family all the success and luck on the big day - they're running for such a great cause and the Society is so grateful to them and all our fundraisers running this weekend. I hope people will sponsor them on their Justgiving page. It is so easy to use and every penny counts.'

The Bupa Great North Run takes place on Sunday, 19 September. To sponsor Alison and her family, please visit www.justgiving.com/thestirlingsx4
