5,000 mile cyclist arrives in Great Yarmouth

Published 15 September 2010

Champion cyclist Phil Swanston was cheered into Great Yarmouth as he continues his mission to pedal around the entire coast of Britain for Alzheimer's Society.

Phil Swanston was welcomed to the Britannia Pier by staff from Alzheimer's Society in Great Yarmouth, who celebrated with him as he reached the 4,500 mile mark on his 5,000 mile cycle challenge.

Phil, who has raised over £14,500 for the charity so far, said;

'I'm supporting Alzheimer's Society because my mum had Alzheimer's disease, so I know how devastating the condition can be for the whole family.

'Sadly, my mum died in July while I was carrying out this cycle challenge. I had promised her I would cycle the whole of the coast, so this made me even more determined to complete on time and raise as much money as possible. The funds will help Alzheimer's Society support people to live well with dementia today, and fund research to find a cure for tomorrow.'

Alex Ivey, Dementia Support Manager for Alzheimer's Society in Great Yarmouth, was at the pier along with Helen Moss, Dementia Support Worker.

Alex said;

'It was great to be here today to celebrate what Phil has achieved - he has raised a fantastic amount for Alzheimer's Society, which will make a real difference to people with dementia and their carers. Phil is set to raise even more money, with 500 miles to go. Alzheimer's Society relies on voluntary donations to continue its vital work, so we are very grateful to Phil for all his efforts and wish him the best of luck for the rest of his journey.'
