Remember the person photography competition winners announced

Published 9 August 2010

Alzheimer’s Society’s Remember the person photography competition drew over 160 entries from photographers capturing the person behind a diagnosis of dementia.

The judges involved in the competition were John Wright who has Alzheimer's disease and lives by himself in London; Joe Bangay a top news and portrait photographer who exhibits regularly; Bruce Bovill, married to Jan who has dementia, and Linda Seaward, Head of Marketing and Publishing at Alzheimer's Society, who is also a published photographer.

As well as looking for images that captured the person's energy, the judges picked their winners on composition and technical competence. In the end, they were unanimous in their selection of a first prize winner, two runners up and a highly commended.

First prize went to Stacy Cronly-Dillon for her photograph of her Grandad Fred at the Duxford Airshow.

The two runner up places were awarded to Dawn Edmonds, for her photograph of her husband, Dave, and Feldore McHugh for his photograph of his elderly father, once a keen gardener, holding a buttercup.

The Old Vic Fote was highly commended for their photo of Gwen holding a puppy. Commended places were also awarded to Dawn Edmonds, Grant Newton, helen/Alan and hoo_choonlye.

Judge Linda Seaward said afterwards,

'It was a challenging task to get 160 photos down to three or four winners.  The standard of work was exceptionally high and so many of the images fulfilled all the criteria.  I'm sure we'll run the competition again next year.'
