A Celebration for Stephen

Published 29 July 2010

Stephen Moreton-Pritchard

Stephen Moreton-Prichard was the Greenwich Theatre’s front-of-house photographer for 15 years. During that time he photographed some true stage greats and household names.

Sadly, Stephen passed away in January after a ten year battle with dementia. Now, his life is to be celebrated with a special one-off show at Greenwich Theatre. 'A Celebration for Stephen' will bring together artists, professionals, colleagues and friends in a special performance for one night only on Sunday 1 August. All the proceeds will go to the Alzheimer's Society.

Celia, Stephen's wife is organising this fabulous musical celebration of his life and career which will range from West Side Story to Mozart to Gilbert and Sullivan. Celia said:

"We met when he joined the advertising agency where I worked in the art department. He was their newly appointed photographer, having started life as an Army officer, then spent three years at a school of drawing and painting; but his hobby became his livelihood. We married six years later. Music was always a passion with him and the theatre photography, for which he will now be best remembered, began at the newly opened Greenwich Theatre in 1969. The Gilbert and Sullivan company I founded in 1995 now performs annually at Greenwich Theatre, so this seemed an appropriate place to put on an evening reflecting many of his musical and humorous tastes, particularly when the theatre was kind enough to waive any hire fee for the occasion!

It's a measure of the man that so many wonderfully talented friends have offered their services to provide a lively and very varied programme. Some are travelling great distances to participate; indeed, one flew in from Australia yesterday.

Having watched his decline for ten years, I felt that donating as much money as possible from the evening to the Alzheimers Society might be a way of helping to find a breakthrough so that others might not be in my sad position in the future.

Do come and support us all; it will be a splendidly enjoyable evening, with professional polish in all departments!"
