Volunteers in Birmingham step up to launch Memory Walk.

Published 26 July 2010

Volunteers put on their walking shoes last week to launch Alzheimer's Society's first flagship Memory Walk in Birmingham.

Fitness First gym in Stirchley played host to the launch where volunteers from supporter Wesleyan Assurance Society joined people with dementia and their carers to step up to their first training session for the event, which is due to take place on Saturday 11th September at Cannon Hill Park.

Emma Dowler, Community Fundraiser for Alzheimer's Society in Birmingham and Solihull said,

'It was great to see so many volunteers here today in preparation for the Memory Walk and I'm confident that our first flagship walk will be a huge success.

There are currently over 14,000 people with dementia in Birmingham and Solihull, and the money raised by the flagship walk will help to them and their families to attend support groups and dementia cafes provided by Alzheimer's Society.

Sam Porter, Wesleyan's Director of Marketing said,

'Wesleyan are proud to support Alzheimer's Society for this year's Memory Walk. Our staff have always shown commendable spirit and loyalty towards charity projects and Alzheimer's Society is particularly close to our hearts as a number of colleagues have personal experience of family or friends affected by dementia. To have a flagship Memory Walk in Birmingham is great news and another opportunity for us to help make a difference.'
