Alzheimer's Society comment on call for further support for carers

Barbara Keeley MP today called for more support from health authorities, GPs and social services for carers who spend more than 50 hours a week looking after others.
Introducing her Carers (Identification and Support) Bill, Ms Keeley highlighted the ageing population and that increasing numbers of people are living with dementia.
Alzheimer's Society comment:
'Alzheimer's Society strongly backs this call for further support for carers. There are around 600,000 people in the UK caring for a person with dementia. These carers usually carry out their roles gladly and without question, but research shows dementia carers experience greater strain and distress than carers of other older people. They also save the UK economy an unbelievable £6 billion a year.
'It is vital dementia carers are provided with the help they need and deserve so they can continue caring, but they must also have support that meets their own needs too.'
