RAF Benevolent Fund swoops in to help local Alzheimer's Society

Published 23 June 2010

The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund (RAFBF) has visited Alzheimer's Society in Stony Stratford to present the charity with a national donation of £55,000.

Air Commodore Paul Hughesdon joined Eileen Winston, Alzheimer's Society's Vice Chair of Trustees, at the charity's local service in The Stables, Vicarage Road. Air Commodore Hughesdon presented the cheque to Eileen, and Lynne Stoodley, Support Service Manager for Milton Keynes Alzheimer's Society.

The RAFBF has supported Alzheimer's Society for 14 years and, including the latest gift, has so far donated a total of £650,000 to the charity across the UK.

Air Commodore Hughesdon also joined in the weekly arts and crafts workshop run by the charity at The Stables. Each week, around 20 local people with dementia and their carers try their hand at creative hobbies including painting and crocheting.

Lynne Stoodley said:

'We would all like to say a big thank you to the RAFBF for this fantastic donation. As a charity, Alzheimer's Society relies on donations to continue its vital work. The generosity of organisations like the fund helps Alzheimer's Society support people to live well with dementia today, and fund research to find a cure for tomorrow.'

Air Commodore Hughesdon, Director of Welfare and Policy at the RAFBF, said:

'Research has shown that 17 per cent of those who access Alzheimer's Society services - both people with dementia and their carers - are part of the RAF family. As the RAF's leading welfare charity, it's vitally important to us that we help people affected by dementia. It was great to visit one of the charity's local bases and see one of the many wonderful services offered.'
