'Sixpence' Cross Atlantic Challenge for Alzheimer’s Society
Published 28 May 2010
On Sunday 23 May 2010 Chris Jackson, an intrepid sailor, set off from Plymouth entering the Jester Challenge in aid of Alzheimer’s Society.
The Jester Challenge is a real feat of endurance and skill, Chris will face a single handed crossing of the North Atlantic, setting out from Plymouth and docking in Rhode Island, USA. He will be attempting to complete this feat in six weeks.
The first Single Handed Transatlantic Race took place in 1960 and the Jester Challenge is timed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this.
Whilst this time round the crossing is not a race it is definitely a challenge and is uniquely without any committees or rules save two - the vessel should be between 20 and 30 feet and make the crossing under sail alone. This will mean that whilst skippering 'Sixpence' Chris will potentially face treacherous conditions including ice and fog, and undoubtedly rough conditions and gale force winds.
Chris has chosen to support Alzheimer's Society,
'My Pa - Jacko lived with dementia. He was a WWII hero who suffered devastating wounds in the Italy campaign but still went on to command a parachute battalion after the war, and subsequently after retiring from active service was Bursar at Balliol College Oxford where he was honoured as an emeritus fellow. I feel that completing the Jester Challenge would be a fitting tribute to him.'
Chris will be raising vital funds to support Alzheimer's Society services for people with dementia and their carers in Devon and Cornwall, there are currently 26,078 people in this area living with dementia.
