KPMG Big Blue Bike Ride set to raise more than £100,000

Published 26 May 2010

A challenge to raise more than £100,000 for people with dementia and their families kicks off in Aberdeen this week.

KPMG partners and staff are aiming to raise over £100,000 for Alzheimer's Society in a 1,500 mile nationwide relay bike ride which sets off at the end of May and concludes in London on 9 June.

A total of over 250 people - KPMG partners, staff and their families, plus alumni and clients of the professional services provider - are taking part in the Big Blue Bike Ride. The relay has two routes across the UK, one beginning in Aberdeen on the 28 May and one starting in Plymouth on the 3 June. The two routes will pass by all of KPMG's 22 offices in the UK, before converging for the final leg and cross the finish line outside KPMG's new offices in Canary Wharf in London.

Mike Kelly, Head of Corporate Responsibility at KPMG, said,

'The Big Blue Bike Ride will see KPMG partners and staff from all over the UK joining together with a common aim - to raise money for Alzheimer's Society. I am confident that the event will be a great success - staff have really got behind the challenge and got their friends and families involved.

'Dementia gradually robs people of their lives and has a devastating impact on families. We are so glad to be able to help those affected and their loved ones.'

Jo Swinhoe, Director of Fundraising and Marketing, at Alzheimer's Society said,

'In the UK, 750,000 people have dementia, and this number is set to rise to a million in just 15 years. Alzheimer's Society champions the rights of people living with dementia, and the millions who care for them.

'Alzheimer's Society relies on donations, to continue our vital work. The support of organisations like KPMG makes it possible to support people to live well with dementia today
and fund research to find a cure for tomorrow. Every mile cycled on the Big Blue Bike Ride will make a real difference to people with dementia.'

Alzheimer's Society is KPMG's People Charity - chosen by its partners and staff - for 2008-2010.  Over the two year relationship, KPMG hopes to raise £1 million to support Alzheimer's Society's network of services, our National Dementia helpline and research projects
