Alzheimer’s Society welcomes appointment of new minister for social care

Published 20 May 2010

Liberal Democrat MP Paul Burstow was today confirmed as Minister for Care Services. In his new role Mr Burstow will oversee social care policy.

The former Liberal Democrat chief whip is a formed member of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Dementia and has a long history of speaking out on issues relating to care for older people and dementia.

Alzheimer's Society comment:

'Paul Burstow's strong social care background and tireless championing of the rights of people with dementia are excellent attributes for a minister for social care. Over the years he has been influential in drawing attention to the use of dangerous antipsychotic drugs and the need for care reform. Alzheimer's Society looks forward to continuing to work closely with him in his new role.

'People with dementia are amongst the biggest users of social care. The government must now move quickly on plans to mend the crumbling social care system. We hope Mr Burstow's leadership will bring together the cross-party consensus necessary to ensure success.'
