Dementia. Its time for action
Published 23 April 2010
To mark World Alzheimer’s Day, on September 23 2010, Alzheimer’s Society in Surrey will be holding an Evensong service at Guildford Cathedral.
Surrey MP's, Mayors and the Lord Lieutenant are invited together with professionals, carers and families to pay tribute to people living with dementia throughout the county. The service also incorporates the opportunity for someone with dementia, a carer or professional working in the field to give a short but very moving address to the congregation.
There are approximately 14,000 people in Surrey with dementia, with numbers increasing. Thousands more of their friends and family are affected by the condition. All are welcome to this service of recognition to everyone affected and all those professionals who work throughout the county in this field.
Anita Avery, Community Fundraiser, says,
'This is an important community event. Dementia is beginning to get the recognition it deserves, but there is still a long way to go in ensuring everybody who has a need, is able to access the right advice and services. Supporting this service is immensely helpful'.
After the service 1,400 balloons will be released by a celebrity supporter of the Alzheimer's Society. Anyone can sponsor a balloon and attach a personalised 'dove card' for a small donation.
Anita continues,
'Many of the messages on the cards move us to tears, especially the ones children do for a grandparent who has died or is living with dementia'.
Guests need to be seated by 17.15 on Thursday 23 September, for a 17.30 start.
For more information about this service and how to sponsor a balloon, please telephone Mandy Morrone, Alzheimer's Society on telephone 01372 729988.
Companies interested in corporate sponsorship should contact Anita Avery on 0759 509 6585 or anita.avery@alzheimers.org.uk.
