Song cycling for Alzheimer's Society - an original fundraising event coming to a town near you

Published 13 April 2010

Susie Strander and Alice Woodbridge are cycling 700 miles from Somerset to Fort William, performing concerts along the way to raise money for Alzheimer's Society and MS Society.

They begin their unique fundraising event on 1 July in Wells, Somerset and are also asking people to join in and cycle with them or if you are a performer why not get involved in the concerts?

Alice said,

'Song Cycling is an idea I've been wanting to action for many years since I became sentient enough of my uncle's suffering from Alzheimer's and the impact it had on his family. He was a GP, diagnosed with early onset in his 50s, suffered for 14 years and was cared for unremittingly by his wife, Shirley Nurock, who has become a loyal member of the Alzheimer's Society and very involved with related research into provision of care and quality of life for those suffering from dementia. '

I wanted to do a fundraiser with a twist and figured that the challenge of the cross UK cycle coupled with the staging of concerts en-route would be a project that could attract a broad audience and therefore more funds.

I've now got on board a wonderful pianist, Susanna Stranders, who has a passionate cause of her own and who is happily partnering me in the project, raising money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. The concert programmes are each centred around a song-cycle (a group of songs by a single composer, connected by a theme or story) and also feature popular opera tunes and lighter music so there should be something for everybody!'
