Jarrow March for Alzheimer’s Society Research

Published 13 April 2010

Jarrow local Garry Rae is planning a truly historic fundraising challenge in aid of Alzheimer’s Society research into dementia.

Garry will recreate the 1936 Jarrow March, walking over 350 miles from Jarrow to London in May 2010, both to raise the profile of dementia, and vital funds into Alzheimer's Society funding of dementia research.

Garry's experiences caring for his father, who died with dementia in 2007, have given him the passion to change things for people facing the devastation of dementia now and in the future.

Garry says;

'Some of the things that I saw in there (his father's care home) really affected me and it always saddens me when someone tells me they have a family member with this awful disease.'

Avid Sunderland fan, Garry, received some words of encouragement from his sporting hero, former footballer and current chairman of Sunderland FC, Niall Quinn,

'This is a tremendous challenge that Garry is undertaking and everyone at the club wishes him well. He is raising funds for a very worthwhile cause and I'm sure he will be successful in his endeavours. I would urge everyone to support him as much as they can.'

Garry's route:

21 - 23 May - Northallerton, Ripon, Harrogate and Leeds.
25 - 31 May - Leeds, Wakefield, Barnsley, Sheffield, Chesterfield, Mansfield and Nottingham.
1 - 2 June - Nottingham, Loughborough and Leicester.
4 - 5 June - Leicester, Market Harborough and Northampton.
7 - 8 June - Northampton, Milton Keynes and Luton.
10 -  12 June - Luton, St Albans, Cricklewood and ending at St Katharine's Dock.
