Intrepid Traveller Raises £7500 for Alzheimer’s Society

Published 8 January 2010

Alzheimer’s Society Supporter Jane Bullock recently completed the Sinai Trek raising over £7,500 for the Side-by-Side project in South Northants.

Jane speaks of her experience;

'The Sinai Trek was an awesome experience that I would recommend to anyone. Joining a group of 47 other challengers (plus trek staff) we trekked over very varied terrain including miles upon miles of deep, soft beach type sand and high dunes; rocky gorges; shaley, stony wadis [dry river beds]; up and down mountains often rock scrambling up only to climb down 700ft. The Coloured Canyon saw us slide downhill on our backs under a boulder that had fallen blocking the path before climbing over many more. At times the Canyon floor was only just wide enough to walk through - however it was all incredibly beautiful and awe inspiring.

Sleeping in Bedouin tents (which resembled draughty bus shelters without fronts!) nights were cool but the group slept well with lights out by 8.30pm and wake up calls at 5.30am. The meals were interesting with a variety of Bedouin and Egyptian food being served to us. The Bedouin made us fresh bread over open fires morning and evening - wonderful! Although we didn't quite know what to make of what seemed like spaghetti soup for breakfast one day!

The organisation was exceptional but unobtrusive so the group always felt safe and supported. Participants all achieved both the Trek challenge and personal challenges - whether it was heights, camping, cold showers, unisex living or the primitive toilet facilities.'

The same challenge is planned for November 2011 and Jane has kindly offered to talk in depth with anyone thinking about signing up. Please contact Liz Thornton (liz.thornton@alzheimers.org.uk) for more details.
