Dementia and Spirituality will be the topic up for discussion on today’s Radio 4’s Beyond Belief. Ernie Rea and his guests will discuss the theological issues raised by Alzheimer's disease.

The Radio 4 programme, which airs today Monday, June 15 at 4.30 pm, also features an interview with Jan John who cares for her husband Rod who has Alzheimer's.

Jan says:

'It is vital that we start looking at the whole person and not just as someone with a collection of symptoms. Rod is not just his body and brain, but also his emotions and will. And he does still respond to prayers that are positive and thankful.'

Neil Hunt, Chief Executive of Alzheimer's Society says,

'The number of people living with dementia is set to soar, and dignity, respect and person centred care are key to supporting those affected.

More research needs to be done on the links between faith and dementia, but enabling people to express their spirituality - whether they have an active faith or not - may aid wellbeing for both people with dementia and their carers.'

Beyond Belief is available as a podcast and to download on the Beyond Belief website.
