There are currently six million carers in the UK and Carers Week 2009 aims to highlight their incredible contribution and achievements.

Carers Week begins today (Monday 8 June) and runs till Sunday 14 June with over 100,000 carers taking part and 1,000 local organisations involved in activities across the UK.

Two new surveys released to mark Carers Week reveal how carers feel they are unrecognised or ignored for their work. However, the good news is that six out of seven people (86%) believe that carers make a valuable contribution, behind only nurses (91%) and firefighters (90%).

Dementia costs the UK economy £17 billion a year. More than heart disease, stroke and cancer combined. Family carers of people with dementia save the UK over £6 billion a year of this cost.

Please also sign the Carers poverty charter. The charter demands that the government take urgent action to improve carers' benefits.
